Music licensing in Italy

Playing music in your business requires a little more effort than just pressing play. Italy's music licensing landscape is somewhat : in Italy, all businesses wishing to play music on-site need licenses from the relevant collecting societies, which could include SCF, SIAE and Soundreef. Italy's oldest performing rights organization is SIAE (Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori). Founded in 1882, SIAE is one of the world's largest collecting societies, boasting a membership in the fields of film, literature, music, performing arts, theater and visual arts. When it comes to music, SIAE protects the performance rights of authors and publishers, as well as distributing royalties to its' members. The second major player in music licensing in Italy is SCF (Società Consortile Fonografici). SCF was created in 1988 in response to a gap in the Italian market for rights protection for record labels. Soundreef is a relative newcomer to Italy's music licensing scene. Soundreef's focus is on protecting performance rights of authors, composers and publishers. For any business playing music on-site in Italy, the music licensing requirements are complicated. Unfortunately, Italy lacks a single one-stop shop solution for acquiring music licenses, which means that you need to get your licenses from each organization separately. SIAE's tariffs are available on their website, but you can only activate a subscription by visiting one of SIAE's four regional offices (Nord Ovest, Nord Est, Centro, Sud). SCF's licensing rates are also available online, but you can contact them via email to sign up. Getting a license from Soundreef is the easiest: just enter some details about your business and you can purchase a license directly online.
