Music licensing in Finland

Streaming music in your business isn't the same as listening to music at home. When you play music for an audience with a business and commercial purpose, you need different licenses.

Music licensing in Finland

Unlike listening to music at home, playing music inside of a business requires licenses. For any business in Finland that wants to play music, that means getting music licenses from the Finnish performing rights organizations: Teosto and Gramex. Thankfully, both organizations offer music licensing for businesses in Finland via the same dedicated platform, Musiikkiluvat. The oldest performing rights organization in Finland is Säveltäjäin Tekijänoikeustoimisto Teosto (or just Teosto), which was founded in 1928. Teosto began as a group of composers and songwriters working to grow the Finnish music industry. Today, Teosto protects the performing rights of and distributes royalties to arrangers, composers, lyricists and publishers. Gramex protects the performing rights of performers and producers in Finland. Established in 1967, Gramex distributes royalties to its' members. Together with Teosto, Gramex co-founded Musiikkiluvat, which is a joint platform for music licensing in Finland. Getting a music license in Finland is easy. Businesses don't need to get licenses from each organization separately, as Teosto and Gramex sell their licenses online through Musiikkiluvat. All you need to do is answer a few basic questions about your business, including the type of business, how much space it occupies, how many months per year you plan to use music, and when you want to start playing music. Musiikkiluvat also guides you through any licensing add-ons your business requires, like playing music outdoors or in the private areas of your business.
