Licencias de música en Suecia

The music licensing landscape in Sweden is fairly straightforward, but that doesn't mean playing music in your business is as simple as hitting the play button. Swedish businesses need to get music licenses from two collecting societies (SAMI and Stim) in advance.

Stim (Svenska Tonsättares Internationella Musikbyrå) is Sweden's oldest copyright collecting society, dating back to 1923. With a membership made up of composers, publishers and writers, Stim protects the rights of its members, collects licensing fees and distributes royalties to them for public performances of their work. Stim collects these fees through music licensing fees.

The other collecting society in Sweden is SAMI (Svenska Artisters och Musikers Intresseorganisation). Founded in 1963 by local trade unions, SAMI protects rights on behalf of the performing artists and musicians. They collect music licensing fees separately from Stim.

All Swedish businesses that require music licenses will have to get them from SAMI and Stim separately, as there is no one-stop shop for music licensing in Sweden. Licenses are available on both SAMI's and Stim's websites, with the cost estimates available after filling in a short form about your business. Some business types may need to report what music they play to each organization.
