Music licensing in Finland
Overview The music licensing landscape in Finland is relatively similar to that of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. There are two main organizations concerned with collecting and distributing royalties, however it is possible to organize a music license via a single, combined initiative. Teosto and Gramex are the two primary organizations, with a business friendly offering in the form of Musiikkiluvat. History Music authors and publishers came together in 1928 aiming to protect and grow the Finnish music industry. Creators including composers Erkki Melartin and Leevi Madetoja help to found Teosto, TekijÀt ja Sanoittajat Oikeutta Vaatimaan or Composers and Lyricists to Demand Their Right. Later, in 1967, Gramex was also established. Working collaboratively, Gramex and Teosto founded GT Musiikkiluvat in 2016 as a partnership to make it easier and simpler for businesses to purchase and manage their music licenses. How to Get a License in Finland A Musiikkiluvat license is fully comprehensive, covering music and video content together. It is possible to get a quote and purchase a music license online, with a few exceptions where it may be required to contact customer service. You will need to share some essential company information, such as the size of the location, the business type and how many months of the year music will be played for.
