Music licensing in the Netherlands

Streaming music in your business isn't the same as listening to music at home. When you play music for an audience with a business and commercial purpose, you need different licenses.
Play it right
Soundtrack is built to bring you music that’s legal for your business. In most cases, everything you need is included in your plan. If you charge admission fees, play live music or timing music to exercise classes you may need additional permissions.

Change the way you play
Soundtrack offers an excellent selection of music because of our direct relationships with publishers, performing rights organizations and record labels. These include Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and more. Our technology accurately tracks your song plays, which ensures that music creators get the right payments from us. Soundtrack Unlimited makes royalty payments about 5 times higher than streaming services for private use.

Music licensing in the Netherlands
Playing music in your business isn't quite as simple as pressing the play button. In the Netherlands, all businesses must get their music licenses from two rights organizations: BumaStemra and Sena. All music licenses are available via Mijn Licentie, the unified licensing platform in the Netherlands. BumaStemra is the main collecting society in the Netherlands and actually consists of two separate organizations: Buma (Bureau voor Muziek-Auteursrechten) and Stemra (Stichting tot Exploitatie van Mechanische Reproduktierechten voor Auteurs). Buma's history dates back to 1913, when it was created to protect performance rights for composers in the Netherlands. Stemra was established two decades later in 1936 with the goal of protecting mechanical rights. Together, BumaStemra ... Sena (Stichting ter Exploitatie van Naburige Rechte) is the youngest collecting society in the Netherlands, having been created in 1993. Sena protects neighboring rights on behalf of recording artists and record labels in the Netherlands, distributing collected royalties between the two groups. Dutch businesses planning to play music on-site need to get their licenses in advance. Luckily, the process is straightforward: music licenses in the Netherlands are only available from Mijn Licentie. Just fill in the form on the Mijn Licentie with a few details about your business (business type, size, and opening dates) and you can purchase the licenses directly online.
