Understand GMR licensing

Music licensing in the United States is complex. Each American PRO represents a different group of music creators with unique music catalogs. Global Music Rights (GMR) is a boutique, invitation-only PRO, with few members (175 songwriters) and a small repertoire (125,000 songs) compared to other American PROs. A GMR license unlocks GMR’s music catalog for your business.

When a business needs a GMR music license

To play music from GMR’s catalog, you need the music license that corresponds to your business type (e.g., hotel, bar, restaurant). This allows you to play music from the likes of Harry Styles, Billie Eilish or Pearl Jam.

Note: a GMR license doesn’t cover songs from other PROs. To play music licensed by ASCAP, BMI or SESAC, you need licenses from them too.

Soundtrack: the easy option

Skip the headache

Music licensing can be a huge headache. Don’t bother with the mayhem: use Soundtrack instead. In the US, Soundtrack includes the public performance licenses you need from GMR, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

Everything included

Sign up to avoid dealing with multiple PROs. Your background music from Soundtrack comes with access to music from GMR, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. A letter from GMR doesn’t settle whether you owe a fee: that depends on which music you play and where it comes from. Music played through Soundtrack is covered by your plan.

With clear pricing, invoiced monthly or annually, and features like Music Scheduling, Explicit Lyric Filter and Spotify Import, you can focus on what your business does best.

How much does a GMR license cost?

When you sign up for a license on GMR’s website, you’re prompted to enter your business type, some basic information about your business and contact details. GMR then contacts you directly regarding the fees for what it terms its blanket license.

GMR doesn’t publish any information about its fee structure.

FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about GMR licensing.

Do I need a GMR license if I use Spotify?

You can’t use Spotify in your business. The terms and conditions are very clear about this: Spotify is only available for personal use.

Is GMR legitimate?

GMR is a legitimate organization. Known formally as Global Music Rights, GMR is a performing rights organization operating in the United States. Its members are about 175 songwriters, composers and publishers. GMR collects licensing fees for them and distributes their royalties.

How does GMR calculate its fees?

GMR doesn’t publish its licensing fees. The only way to find out its blanket license fee is to apply for one. GMR asks for your business type when you apply, so the fee is likely to vary by type of business.

Does Soundtrack replace direct GMR agreements?

For music played through Soundtrack, yes. Soundtrack users in the US don’t need to get licensed directly from GMR for that music. GMR music from other sources, such as live bands or DJs, isn’t covered.
