Understand ASCAP licensing

Music licensing in the US is complex. Each of the six-plus PROs represents different music creators with unique music catalogs. ASCAP is one of the largest, with over one million songwriters and publishers. An ASCAP license unlocks ASCAP’s music catalog for your business.

When a business needs an ASCAP license

To play music from ASCAP’s catalog, you need the ASCAP music license for your business type — bar, restaurant or hotel. It gives you permission to play the likes of Beyoncé, Duke Ellington or Joy Division.

Note: an ASCAP license doesn’t cover songs from other PROs. To play music licensed by BMI, GMR or SESAC, you need licenses from them too.

Soundtrack: the easy option

Skip the headache

Music licensing can be an expensive headache. Say goodbye to paperwork and fees, and use Soundtrack instead. In the US, Soundtrack includes the public performance licenses you need from ASCAP, BMI, GMR and SESAC.

Everything included

Sign up to avoid handling multiple PROs. Your background music from Soundtrack comes with access to music from ASCAP, BMI, GMR and SESAC. A letter from ASCAP doesn’t settle whether you owe a fee: that depends on which music you play and where it comes from. Music played through Soundtrack is covered by your plan.

With clear pricing, invoiced monthly or annually, and features like Music Scheduling, Explicit Lyric Filter and Spotify Import, you can focus on what your business does best.

How much does an ASCAP license cost?

Pricing depends on many factors. Your business type sets your license class. Square footage, capacity, entrance fees, the number of speakers or the number of guests can also change the fee.

ASCAP doesn’t have a blanket license cost. Fees aren’t flat and prices change every year.

FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about ASCAP licensing.

Do I need an ASCAP license if I use Spotify?

You can’t use Spotify in your business. The terms and conditions are clear: Spotify is only available for personal use.

Is ASCAP legitimate?

Yes. ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, is a performing rights organization in the US. It collects licensing fees on behalf of its songwriter, composer and publisher members and distributes royalties to them.

How does ASCAP calculate its fees?

ASCAP doesn’t have a flat rate. It uses a specific calculation for each business type, known as a license class.

Does Soundtrack replace direct ASCAP agreements?

For music played through Soundtrack, yes. Soundtrack users in the US don’t need to get licensed directly from ASCAP for that music. ASCAP music from other sources, such as live bands or DJs, isn’t covered.
