Music licensing in Canada
The music licensing landscape in Canada is somewhat complex, with three organizations (CONNECT, Re:Sound, and SOCAN) covering most types of rights. Thankfully, Canada's two largest performing rights organizations use a single online platform where businesses can get all of their music licenses. SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) is Canada's largest rights organization. Established in 1990 as a merger between CAPAC (a copyright collective dating back to 1925) and PROCAN (a copyright collective created in 1940), SOCAN focuses on collecting royalties for public performances in Canada on behalf of songwriters and composers. Re:Sound was formed in 1997. Their membership is primarily artists and record labels, and they focus on collecting neighboring rights in Canada on their behalf. Together with SOCAN, Re:Sound launched an online platform for selling licenses to Canadian businesses looking to play music on their premises. CONNECT is an organization that protects the master rights of sound recordings in Canada. Their members are primarily copyright holders of the recordings themselves (e.g., record labels). Canadian businesses looking to play music on-site need to sort out their licenses before turning the music on. Two of the major rights organizations joined forces to create Entandem, where any business in Canada can register online for music licenses that cover music protected by SOCAN and Re:Sound.
