Music licensing in Latvia

Streaming music in your business isn't the same as listening to music at home. When you play music for an audience with a business and commercial purpose, you need different licenses.

As the music licensing space changes frequently, please note that the information on this website is for general guidance only. Soundtrack aims to provide accurate and current information, but cannot guarantee its completeness or accuracy. It is solely your responsibility as the user to ensure you hold all necessary licenses for your business, in accordance with the laws of relevant territories.

Music licensing in Latvia

Playing music in a Latvian business means getting licenses from two collecting societies: AKKA/LAA and LaIPA. Each protects a different group of rights holders and bills separately.

AKKA/LAA represents more than 6,500 Latvian authors across music, literature, drama and visual and audiovisual works, a broader remit than most music-only societies. As a member of both CISAC and GESAC, the international and European authors' rights confederations, and through reciprocal agreements with more than 130 organizations abroad, it also collects on behalf of songwriters from around the world whose music is played in Latvia.

LaIPA (Latvian Performers' and Producers' Association) represents performers and phonogram producers instead of songwriters. Established in 1999, it's the only organization in Latvia handling performers' and producers' neighboring rights. It represents more than 2,000 Latvian performers and producers directly and, through bilateral agreements with collecting societies abroad, more than 2 million worldwide, including labels like Sony, Warner and Universal. LaIPA is also Latvia's national ISRC agency, the body that assigns unique codes to recordings.

Since AKKA/LAA and LaIPA protect different rights, Latvian businesses need to apply for licenses from both separately. Reach out to each society directly to confirm what your business needs.
